President Abbas, King Abdullah II Call for Stopping Israeli Attempts to Scuttle Efforts to Launch Negotiations Date : 19/9/2009 Time : 19:06
AQABA, September 19, 2009 (WAFA)- President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II of Jordan emphasized the need for the world community to shoulder its responsibility and stop Israeli attempts to scuttle efforts to launch serious and effective negotiations towards Palestinian statehood.
The two leaders held talks in the city of Aqaba today on latest efforts to kickstart Palestinian-Israeli peace talks and find a solution to the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution.
They warned that missing the opportunity for peace now at hand would jeopardize regional peace and stability, saying that Israel's continuing settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem, was the key block to making the required progress in peace efforts.
The two leaders agreed on the need for Washington to take a leading role to jumpstart peace talks that would address all final status issues according to a fixed timeline leading to an independent state on sovereign Palestinian soil.
King Abdullah called for extending all forms of Arab and international support to President Abbas and the Palestinian National Authority in their quest to realize statehood and independence through negotiations that should kick off as soon as possible according to agreed terms of reference and the Arab peace initiative.
