Serious Violations of International Human Rights in Gaza Conflict

Serious Violations of International Human Rights in Gaza Conflict Date : 30/9/2009 Time : 22:15

GENEVA, September 30, 2009 (WAFA)- The report of the Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict provided evidence that serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, perhaps amounting to war crimes, speakers said Wednesday in the general debate of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).

They said this required a full and impartial investigation, and there had to be full accountability for any serious violations of international law.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict was at the heart of the situation in the Middle East, and there had to be a Palestine State. A solution for the Palestinian refugees also had to be found, they added.

Speaking in the general debate on human rights situations in Palestine and other Occupied Arab Territories were Ireland, New Zealand, Lebanon, Iceland, Maldives, United Arab Emirates and League of Arab States.

The following non-governmental organizations also took the floor: Mouvement contre le Racisme et pour l'AmitiƩ entre les Peuples, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, International Federation of Human Rights Leagues, Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, International Human Rights Commission, International Commission of Jurists, World Union for Progressive Judaism, Centre Europe Tier Monde, North-South XXI, Defence for Children International, Hudson Institute, International Educational Development, Union of Arab Jurists, Maryam Ghasemi Educational Institute for the Support of Children, Institute for Women's Studies and Research, Organization for Defending Victims of Violence, Association of World Citizens, United Nations Watch and Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies.

Calif. Library Asked to Drop Sponsorship of Anti-Islam Event

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/11/09) - A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called on the San Diego Public Library to drop its sponsorship of an upcoming presentation by an extremist anti-Islam group whose founder claims that “every practicing Muslim is a radical Muslim” and that Islam is the “real enemy” of America.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says the August 15 presentation, “Radical Islam: Its Components and Root Causes,” will be offered by a representative of Act! For America. A library news release claims the presenter will show that followers of “radical Islam” are a “small, vocal faction not to be confused with the Islam practiced by more than one billion people world-wide.”

But in a letter to San Diego Public Library Director Deborah Barrow, CAIR-San Diego Public Relations Director Edgar Hopida said that Act! For America is best known for sweeping condemnations of Islam and attempts to demonize mainstream Muslims.

When asked about the controversy over the presentation, ACT! for America’s national field director claimed Islam has been a “very violent geopolitical movement” throughout history.

"No library would - or should - sponsor a lecture by an anti-Semitic, racist or neo-Nazi speaker," said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. "It is unconscionable that a representative of a group that promotes a similar form of bigotry would be so honored."

Hooper said anti-Muslim bigotry like that advanced by ACT! for America can lead to the types of attacks reported recently by African Muslims in New York.

In his letter to the library, Hopida wrote:

“Because we are strong defenders of the First Amendment right to free speech, even the bigoted speech offered by groups such as Act! for America, we do not ask that the presentation be canceled.

“Instead, we respectfully request that the San Diego Public Library withdraw its sponsorship of the event so that local taxpayers are not made unwittingly complicit in the promotion of hatred and bigotry. We also ask that a representative from the San Diego Muslim community be permitted to offer accurate and balanced information about Islam to those attending the event.”

Hopida's letter also outlined Act! for America’s history of portraying mainstream Islam and all Muslims as threats to America and the world. He wrote:

“Act! for America’s founder Brigitte Gabriel told the Australian Jewish News: ‘Every practising Muslim is a radical Muslim.’ She also claimed that ‘Islamo-fascism is a politically-correct word...it's the vehicle for Islam...Islam is the problem.’

“When asked whether Americans should ‘resist Muslims who want to seek political office in this nation,’ Gabriel said: ‘Absolutely. If a Muslim who has -- who is -- a practicing Muslim who believes the word of the Koran to be the word of Allah, who abides by Islam, who goes to mosque and prays every Friday, who prays five times a day -- this practicing Muslim, who believes in the teachings of the Koran, cannot be a loyal citizen to the United States of America.’

“Brigitte Gabriel has also stated: ‘America and the West are doomed to failure in this war unless they stand up and identify the real enemy: Islam.’"

Hopida’s letter quoted a New York Times summary of Gabriel’s anti-Islam extremism:

“'She has made it her mission -- one might say her crusade -- to warn that radical Muslims, a term she defines as all practicing Muslims, are bent on taking over the West…Gabriel believes that Muslims cannot serve loyally in the U.S. military, that interfaith dialogue is ‘nonsense,' and that the difference between the Arab world and Israel is ‘barbarism versus civilization.’ The Muslim world will not be satisfied until all infidels are converted or eliminated, she has said.’

He also cited inaccurate and inflammatory Act! for America online “educational” materials, which state:

“Muslims have been using propaganda as part of their wars of conquest for almost 1400 years. It is a key strategy to prepare unwilling populations to submit to Islam. One of the most difficult aspects of defending America from Islamist intentions is its multifaceted nature. It is truly a wolf in sheep‘s clothing…

“The Qur‘an and Islamic law clearly state that all Muslims have a moral, religious and legal obligation to wage holy war against all infidels until this 7th century ideology is the only religion on Earth…

“Their mastery of propaganda is based on Islamic law and religious doctrine that state that Muslims have a duty to lie to nonbelievers in order to defeat them and subjugate them to Islam...

“When Muslims make up only a small minority of a nation‘s population, they wage stealth jihad. This approach allows them to infiltrate a country without setting off any alarms. Their goal is to prepare the country for the next stage of jihad. When their population increases enough Muslims start to use ‘offensive warfare,’ such as assassinations to silence critics, bombings and other violence to intimidate enemies and punish perceived slights to their religion.”

Hopida’s letter noted that Act! for America was recently banned from using a Texas library after it violated guidelines of the library’s meeting room usage policy.

Palestinian Women Detainees for Shalit Video

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM – Israeli occupation forces agreed on Wednesday, September 30, to free twenty Palestinian women detained in its jails in return for fresh information on its soldier Gilad Shalit, captured by Palestinian resistance fighters three years ago. "The Israeli security cab decided to authorize the release of 20 Palestinian women detainees and prisoners," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"Israel will receive updated and clear proof on the health and condition of Gilad Shalit. This proof of life will be handed to Israel by the mediators in the form of a videotape that has recently been filmed."

The release of the detainees and the handing over of the videotape will be done back-to-back on Friday, October 1.

Shalit, now 23, was captured by Palestinian resistance fighters in June 2006 in an attack that left two soldiers killed.

The video will prove that Shalit is alive.

"The video is one minute long and is proof that Shalit is alive," a spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committees, one of the three groups that carried out the raid in which Shalit was captured, told AFP.

Four of the Palestinian women due to be released belong to Hamas, five to Fatah, three to the Islamic Jihad, one to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and seven independents.

All but one of the women are from the occupied West Bank.

The detainees had all served at least two thirds of their sentences and none had more than two years left to serve.

Victory

The Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, confirmed the deal, which was proposed by Egyptians and Germans mediating the indirect talks between the group and Israel for a prisoner swap.

“As we go ahead with this exchange, we reiterate our national and moral commitment to do all we can to help free our detainees in Israeli detentions,” Abu Obeida, Al-Qassam spokesman, told a press conference in Gaza City.

“We promise you a comprehensive and honorable deal (in exchange for Shalit).”

The Palestinian groups that captured Shalit want to trade him for some of the nearly 11,000 Palestinian detainees, including women and minors, in Israeli jails.

The new development marked a major breakthrough in nearly three years of on-again, off-again Egyptian-brokered negotiations between Israel and Hamas for an exchange. German mediators joined the talks in July.

Since 2006, Cairo has been trying to broker a deal under which Shalit would be released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit last week urged Israel to release 1,000 Palestinian detainees in exchange for Shalit and show more flexibility.

Netanyahu’s office said the exchange was meant as "a confidence-building measure... ahead of decisive stages in the negotiations" for Shalit's release.

We Want Equality: Muslims Tell Merkel

BERLIN — As German Chancellor Angela Merkel proceeds with negotiating a new coalition after winning a second four-year term, Muslims are hoping her second government would deal with them more positively as equal citizens rather than a potential threat.

"We want Chancellor Merkel and her new government to give us justice," Nadeem Elias, chairman of the Supreme Council of Muslims in Germany, told IslamOnline.net on Tuesday, September 29.

"We want to feel it’s a government for all people regardless of ethnic, religious and cultural differences. Everybody should feel that their interests are being protected by the government.”

Merkel, 55, secured another four-year mandate after her Christian Democrats (CDU) and its Christian Social Union (CSU) got 33.8 percent of the vote.

The conservative chancellor, dubbed most powerful woman on Earth by Forbes magazine, is working on a new centre-right coalition with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP).

"We hope the new government would give more attention to Muslim affairs and would work to activate their role in the society," said Ibrahim Al-Zayyat, the director of the Islamic Assembly in Germany.

He added that Muslims expect the government to ensure them justice and equality.

"We want equal employment opportunities," Al-Zayyat stressed, arguing that some jobs remain out of Muslims reach either because they are not qualified or because of racism against them.

He said the government should give more attention to employing Muslims, particularly in state institutions.

There are more than 4 million Muslims in Germany, including nearly 220,000 in Berlin.

* New mindset

Germany Muslims leaders are also hoping that the new government would change its approach in dealing with Muslims.

"Muslims should not be looked at as a threat to the country or a source of destabilization,” said Elias, chairman of the Supreme Council of Muslims in Germany.

“The government should not just focus on passing laws that restrict Muslim rights and violate their privacy.”

He called for a positive approach to the Muslim presence in the European country.

"The government should instead try to develop and make use of Muslims’ potentials in the development of Germany.”

Elias believes this could be achieved by raising Muslims awareness about their civil and religious rights and allowing them to practice them on equal footing with other citizens.

“Muslims should also be given more room to engage politically and socially.”

Muslim leaders urged the new government to recognize Islam as an official religion.

"We also want the government to deal with Islam on equal footing with other faiths such as Christianity and Judaism," said Al-Zayyat, the director of the Islamic Assembly in Germany.

This, he explained, include a recognition of Islam as an official religion, teaching Islam in schools and giving the Muslim faith airtime in the media.

Islam comes third in Germany after Protestant and Catholic Christianity.

Al-Zayyat said the government should encourage municipalities to facilitate mosque construction permits.

Mosque building has become very difficult in Germany and many European countries in recent years because of vicious campaigns by right-wing parties.

But Maged el-Saeda, an immigrant of Lebanese origin, is skeptical that the new government would meet the Muslims’ aspirations.

“I think things would rather be more difficult,” he told IOL.

“I hope the government would prove me wrong and adopt positive policies towards Muslims and immigrants.”
